The "Great Gulf" Engine

[ On to Gears ]

Our engine: "Great Gulf".  The boiler is canted downward about 12 degrees to compensate half the average grade of 25 degrees.
The grade reaches a maximum of 37 degrees! Each side of the engine has two pistons, one pushing fore and one aft. They drive the front or rear axle.
The wheels simply hold the engine up -- they provide no motive power. That's provided by the cog gear in the center of each axle. July 16, 1998
