80. Johann KRAUTER
(3) was born on 9 Mar 1813 in Lautenbach, Oberamt Weiblingen, Wurtemberg,
Germany.(3)
(12) 1945 Krauter book lists 9 Mar 1815, but
1995 Krauter book lists 9 Mar 1813. He died on 13 Jun 1906 in Bucyrus, OH.
Johann was an only son, but his parents are not known.
Johann and Christine Katherine, with their first five sons J. Jacob, Christian,
John, William, and Gottlieb, left Lautenbach on the evening of September 19,
1854 with the Hiebers, F. Messner, & Keil families. They traveled in big
wagons and a train, with their numerous chests, trunks, & baggage, to the
Port of Le Havre, France. There they boarded the Westmoreland, a three-masted
sailing vessel. After a very hazardous and stormy 28-day trip they landed in
Dunkirk, N.Y. on 4 November 1854. They traveled by another boat to Sandusky
City, Ohio, and then overland to Brokensword, Crawford County, Ohio. There they
met other "Landsleute" from the old country and a German Methodist
Congregation (which they joined in 1857). The "real motive" for leaving
the Homeland was to escape German military duty for the sons (J. Jacob was then
12). Despite this relocation, J. Jacob then had to serve in the U.S. Civil War.
Sometime after Christine's death (12 August 1882), Johann suffered a mowing machine
accident, leaving his left hand crippled. He then retired to Bucyrus, Ohio.
Johann and Christine always lived frugally and simply. They were devout Christians,
greatly concerned with the physical and spiritual welfare of their families,
neighbors, & friends. Johann was a tither, and gave liberally to the church
locally and for the extension of Christ's Kingdom. He was known as a man of
honesty & integrity, faith & prayer, a regular attendant at all church
services, and versed in the Scriptures.
Johann had abundant health, and was "laid aside" for only his last
three months -- his passing on was "quiet and serene". He was married
to Christine Katherine BOERNER on 18 May 1841 in Lautenbach? Germany.

Jacob KRAUTER(3) was born on 20 Oct
1842 in Lautenbach? Germany. He died on 7 May 1934. After moving to Ohio from
Germany at age 12, at least in part because his family wanted to avoid German
military service for Jacob and his (then four) brothers, Jacob had to serve in
the U.S. Civil War. He served from October 1861 to July 1865, and was a prisoner
of war in Tyler, Texas for one day less than a year. Though he suffered the
usual hardships and privations common to prisoners of war, he came through it
without any serious handicaps and lived to over 91 years old.
